Hi all. I care for a cat colony that is not feral at all. My idiot neighbor got a kitten, didn't spay it or take care of it at all and now 3 years later
we're pushing 20 cats (not counting those that have dissapeared over time.) Spay your cats!!! I've known everyone of these cats since they were born,
practically. Now they pretty much live on my back porch.
Anyway, I've been caring for them for about 18 months or so, slowly getting everyone spayed/neutered (2 adults to go who currently have litters, then we'll start on the unadopted kittens). My question is about illnesses, diseases and vet care. This summer all of the cats seemed to have colds. Fleas are a year round problem (I live in Florida). Now they all seem to be getting worms (Just spent almost $200. at the vet taking care of 2 little guys who were so infested they were close to dying. Another $60 on one of the 4 weeks old- who dissappeared for a day and showed up looking like he had been dragged by something.) Needless to say I can't afford to spend $100. per cat at the vet on top of the food and paying to spay everyone. (Although I have a great resource for the spaying at an awesome price.) How do you all do it? I really love these guys and want to do right by them, but just can't afford everything they need sometimes.
Needless to say I'm REALLY looking forward to the day when everyone is spayed, the population stabilizes and maybe I can relax a little :-)))
Oh, what the heck...I guess I just needed to vent. Thanks for listening.
