Posts: 1 Sep 27, 2009 18:38:19	Tags : kitten, training, aggressive Hi ...! I am new to this forum, and have been reading the articles posted about cat aggression. I have a three month kitten named Shilo who has been with the family for three weeks now. She is very aggressive at times, and very affectionate at times. I am trying to train her to not attack humans, and it's a bit exhausting. I am also trying to figure out why she is so aggressive, and whether or not her behaviour is a sign of something we are not doing right, or if it's just normal. When she gets into her aggressive modes, she runs around the house very quickly, pouncing and attacking with her claws whatever is there. She gets a very wild look in her eye and can't be calmed down. I am torn because I don/t want to discourage her from being a natural kitten but I don't want to be physically harmed either! Yesterday, my husband and I locked her out the bedroom twice when she would not calm down, just so we could go to sleep in peace. We give her a lot of attention and affection and feed her well. Any advice would be welcome! Thanks!

Mother cats are strong on discipline,sin binning her like you have done works well ,a firm "No" and putting in a small room with litter tray, water and food and no toys for a few hours ,will get thru to her,and growing up will help,but you are right to worry if not corrected early a year down the track you will have a 7 kilo kitty doing this and it not good for anyone,please keep us up dated.and what your little terror's name?

My mother found her on the side of the highway after she was hit by a car as a little kitten, nursed her back to health, and gave her to my brother and his girlfriend. After six months they had to give her back. She destroyed all their curtains, several blinds, and destroyed their waterbed. She finally calmed down, but not completely until she was 3 years old. I suggest keeping the nails trimmed to cut down on destruction and yourself getting hurt. It's very easy to do and I've found that human fingernail clippers work best. Just be careful not to cut the quick. If your kitten is still fairly young, when she gets in her crazy state I would suggest scruffing her and holding her until she calms down. If she's older this might not work. I've found it best (with both my own cats and foster kittens) to put kittens "to bed" in their own personal space. For me, it's my bathroom. A litter box, a bed, and a couple toys. Then whenever I go to bed I can get some sleep and when I leave the house they can't destroy my house. It also gives them their own personal "quiet time."

Posts: 11 Nov 18, 2009 21:03:51	When my cats were kittens (and even now when they do something I don't approve of) I yelp or whine in a really high pitch drawn out OWWWWCH! It has always stopped their undesireable behaviour dead in it's tracks. I think that they get somewhat caught up in the moment of what they are doing and they forget we can't play like they do. The yelp seems to snap them out of that mindset and bring them back to reality. But do not use that pitch or word for anything else but to correct a behaviour that you do not like.
