Very young kitten with diarrhea |
Lead | ||
|
A week and a half ago we got a kitten who looked about 3 weeks to a month old. We put her on very good pellets for kittens (Iams) and for about two days she
was fine. Then she stopped eating for about two days and her diarrhea started and as of yet has not stopped (for a week now). It is the consistency of paste
and she goes to the loo a lot during the day so her bum is red and a bit swollen. She is now eating fine and drinks enough water but still no normal stools. We
have tried her on porridge, rice and baby food which she eats but it does not help. She stills runs around, plays and gets up to mischief
. Please...if anyone has any advice we will be very grateful...especially Eva!

Mark and little Eva! What a precious little girl she is! Thanks so much for sharing her picture.
I'm so sorry that you're going though this diarrhea mess with her. I can count on one hand the kittens I've had who have NOT had diarrhea at some point. Diarrhea is a very common problem in kittens. Diarrhea can have different sources, so it's best to get the stool checked by the vet. It could be coccidia, roundworms, tapeworms, formula intolerance, giardia, etc. Your vet will give you the proper drug to kill the parasite or remedy the situation. It's very important to make sure that Eva isn't or doesn't become dehydrated. Plain Pedialyte does wonders for dehydration in kittens and cats. Here are some links about various sources that cause diarrhea: http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/coccidiosis.html http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/worms.html http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/allergies.html (food allergies/intolerance is mentioned at the bottom of the page) http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/giardiasis.html Give Eva scritches for us. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi
Thanks very much for your advise! Eva is doing so much better now and is prancing around now with boundless energy. She came into out lives one morning when we were walking around a suburb here in Cape Town. Just out of curiosity we popped into this tiny pet store. We went to the kittens and little Eva was lying all by herself in the litter box apart from the others. Our hearts just felt for her so we went across the road to have a coffee and talk about it. There was no point in talking about it though as I had both already made up our minds. We went back last week to see if the other kittens we had seen had been taken (again out of curiosity) which they had and ended up taking another little one. His name is Januk. The two of them get along so well but unfortunately he also has tummy problems. We gave him some medicine and a lot of worms came out. That was on Friday night. His tummy is still upset.

Ah, but what a handsome little boy Januk is! I'm sure he and Eva will do fine under your care, Mark. Thanks for the wonderful update. Keep up the good work
and make sure that both kittens are well hydrated as they battle those nasty worms. Give both little gems scritches for me!

Thank you both very much! The past week has not been a good one though. Poor Januk still has the tummy
problem and there is blood in it. I have looked on the web and it can be a number of things. He has also taken to peeing on beds and chairs. We want to take
him to the vet but after Eva we really cannot afford it as it costs more than going to the doctor. He still runs around and plays with Eva so it is a little
confusing. I am going to try changing his litter (we are using the crystals) to those little balls (cannot remember what it's called right now) and see if
there is any change. We are both really worried as we all love him so much...especially little Eva...

So you haven't taken Januk to the vet then? Stop adopting if you cannot afford to pay for basic vet care. You took on the responsibility when you adopted
the second kitten, Mark. It's imperative to get him to the vet. There are so many things that can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea is NOT an illness. It is a symptom of an underlying condition or illness.
Stop looking at stuff on the net and get on the phone. Call vets in your area who will accept monthly payments. Be upfront with them and you will find that most good vets will let you set up payment arrangements. Again, I cannot stress strongly enough to get him to a vet. Januk may be suffering from cystitis, FLUTD, or some other form of urinary tract illness. If left untreated, URIs can be a death sentence. Please do the responsible thing and take Januk to the vet immediately. |
