There's no certain prevention of chronic renal failure (CFR) in cats and it can strike at any age. However, it usually occurs in both males and females around the age of 7-15 years. It's been highly suggested by thsoe in the veterinary field that feeding cats a long term diet of dry only cat food can bring about CFR or some form of kidney and/or urinary disease in cats.

As for the specific brand, there are many that are good as long as it's low in protein, phosphorus/phosphate, and sodium and has increased potassium and Vitamin B. Most of the better diets will be prescription diets from your vet, but there are some that you can purchase at good pet supply stores. We use Royal Canin, but there are many more along RC's line of cat food that you could check into.
