Posts: 28 May 1, 2008 11:45:38 Littermate	Here is a pic of Whitey and her kids in their "crate" my husband lovingly built for their safety. I have 3 more pics in my "image" gallery. The kids are 4 1/2 weeks old today. They seem to be doing fine. Their learning curve is definitely straight up right now . They are not interested in any soft kitten food at this time. We have offered it on 3 different occassions. We will keep trying. The little white kitten we call Molly has successfully used her own litterbox - not sure about the others. Still a little drainage from the eyes - no sneezing or wheezing though. We spend a lot of time playing and observing them. We are enjoying having them.

Posts: 4560 May 1, 2008 12:53:25 Critter Companion	What a great picture of what looks like a very happy kitty family! I'm sure you are enjoying them and rightfully so. Am I seeing one eating the dry kitten chow, or does it just look like that? If so, that's fine and they might prefer that to soft food. They are a bit young for dry, if my memory serves me right, but if it's kitten food then that works! Looking forward to more updates and more pics! What a bunch of sweeties!

Posts: 28 May 1, 2008 14:45:39 Littermate	The kitten is not eating the dry food. So far, they have no interest in wet kitten food either. We keep dry kitten food in there always for Momma. She still wants to eat constantly. The meow alot now that they are up and about. It seems that they are bored or unsatisfied, yet they turn up their nose to food. We have added a few toys to the pen. Any suggestions?

Posts: 1209 May 1, 2008 16:24:38 Critter Companion Human in Training	When I had mine, I took kitten food (dry) and made a paste out of it, by mixing it with water. First time it was a sloppy paste, and as they aged I made it more dry with little chunks of dry mixed in it. Some didn't like it either, so I had to put some on my finger, and put my finger in it's mouth to get the new taste and texture going for them. That was a suggestion from this site as I had no clue what I was doing at that time. I also had to put them up to the bowl each time until they got used to it, but then when they knew what it was, and how good it tastde, and how full it made their belly feel.....I had to be careful putting it in there as they about attacked the plate Just had one last thought....I had a small plate that I used instead of abowl, as they will walk through it, and sit in it while they eat. They sure are messy little kitties that is for sure. Try a flat plate and soupy food, and see what happens. Keep us posted. LOVE the picture!

Posts: 4346 May 1, 2008 18:12:38 FF&F Staff Administrator Upside Down and Backwards In Ozland	Well done,Whitey looks in very good condition for a cat that has been feeding babes,exactly as you would hope,I predict the kittens will start on solids in the next few days now,most start dead on 4 weeks ,that said one or two take until over 5 weeks,all different/ Thanks so for sharing the photo,lovely to see the faces after hearing about them all.

Posts: 4560 May 2, 2008 09:30:21 Critter Companion	You can also supplement with some KMR (Kitten milk replacement) which is available in pet stores and some Walmart stores. They should lap that up and then you can mix a bit of dry food in it and make a paste as Susan suggested. Whitey would probably benefit from KMR or some Cats Milk (another supplement available in most stores) as well. Other than that, sounds like all is going well and on schedule. As Susan said, they will walk through the food and be very messy...a small plate works great and the heavier the plate the better so they don't tip it over as well. Posts: 3710 May 3, 2008 01:23:31 Critter Companion	Wow, that's a chubby mommy! Good for her! The colors of the kittens are too funny. I pictured all white kittens, but then you've got the black sheep of the family, along with the tabby one (I think?). The eating will come. Mom's so big still that there's probably plenty of milk. My 5.5-weeker just started this week, really - and I've had some go a week or even two longer. (I had one bottlebaby who would not eat a bite of solid food for until 9.5 weeks of age! Including during an emergency I had when I was out of the house for 14 hours straight and couldn't bottlefeed her! I offered her canned food when I came home and all she did was scream at me until I procured the bottle! I was really getting worried, as I had this spayed kitten all ready for adoption except that she wouldn't eat! But she finally did.)

Posts: 28 May 8, 2008 12:39:34 Littermate	Thanks for all your replys. It's great to hear from everyone! This weeks update is they are eating soft/solid food now and everyone seems to be using their litter box. Their little "weepy" eyes have totally cleared up too. They look really good and they are just so darn cute! They will be 6 weeks old this weekend. We let them out of the crate into the garage and they love it! They are doing the arched back, sidewinder thing now! Absolutely hilarious to watch - quite entertaining actually! Momma is in season. She is not happy being crated and is quite vocal about it. Not that I blame her - it has almost been 8 weeks since we crated her. If she can just hang in there a couple more weeks - we can get her spayed and let her out. The suspected father is a grey tabby. I think that is where the black kitten comes from and obviously the little grey tabby. Thats all for now . . .

You sure don't want her to end up pregnant again and it's so hard to watch them when they are miserable due to being stuck in a crate. If the kittens are eating, she's ready to be spayed and will recover in a day or so as far as discomfort, or you can wait until it's time to have them all done. Thanks so much for the continued updates!

Posts: 28 May 9, 2008 11:16:07 Littermate	Whitey gets to come out of the crate each time the kittens are let out. She loves her "out" time! We are having a huge graduation party at the house this Saturday. Our oldest daughter graduated from Nursing School! I suspect the kittens can work their "cute magic" on at least 1 of the 70 guests coming! We'll see. So far I only have 1 home secured.

Posts: 4560 May 9, 2008 14:52:45 Critter Companion	What is the reason that Whitey has to be confined? I may have missed that in your earlier posts but I can't remember if you have other cats. If there are no unaltered males and she can't get outside, it should be safe to allow her out of her crate. Any time from this point on would be safe to spay her as well and then you have no worry about her possibly becoming pregnant again. Is the "suspected father" your cat? If so, or even if not, he should be neutered to prevent him from fathering more kittens. Congrats to your daughter on her graduation! That is fantastic! Hopefully those kittens will have perspective homes before the day is out! Edited to add: I do remember now that you said you were taking Whitey for her spay when you take the kittens in, sorry. She should do fine for another 2 weeks the way things are...limited, supervised time out of the crate and then returned to it with her babies.
