Actually although my Leo looks just like my avatar it's not him, I googled this guy cause I have a soft spot in my heart for orange tabbys I don't know
why. I love all cats but something about the orange boys.... maybe cause we had a "Morris" growing up and he had such a personality.

It looks like a few of us have orange cats by the looks of some of the other avatars.

We have 4, but just trapped 2 more!
Orange babies definitely have
personalities all their own!

Yep, you'll find quite a few orange kids here. Running neck to neck are black ones (or black/white).

And is it true that orange are males and calico are females?

No to both, Hon.
The orange gene is more dominant in males, but we have nine orange females in our feral cat colony and one in our sanctuary, our little Cheerio. A calico cat isn't a breed of cat but a color pattern. To be called calico, three colors must be present: black, white and orange. Variations of these colors include gray, cream and ginger. A "true" calico cat has large blocks of these three colors, a "tortoise shell" or "tortie" cat has a mix of these three colors (blended/swirled together more than distinct blocks of color). In rare instances a calico can be male. In this situation, the cat has two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome (XXY). Cats with this chromosomal configuration are usually sterile (not able to breed). This is similar to a condition in humans called Klinefelter's Syndrome, or XXY Syndrome. |

Thank you for the information, I have never seen an orange female I would love to see what their personality is like. I love the calico colors. My Maybelle is
a washed out tortie.... my vet onces told me the torties are tigery... Annie was tigery but Maybelle is a love bug.

Well, you know cats. Each has their own unique purrsonality!
Seriously, though, I have found that orange cats, both female and male, are pretty laid back. Almost every red I've known has a very mellow outlook on life and doesn't get to stressed out about things going on around him or her. Of course, if one is ill, then like people, they can have a temporary personality change until their health issue is resolved.

Makes me wonder what's wrong with Leo, cause he's down right cranky.... he's been known to swat a few visitors, and draw blood.... (embarrassing to
say the least). When we go to the vets he's uncontrollable to the point we have to sedate him because he attacks people through the crate. They have to use
lead lined gloves to hold him. He's just wild, it's become such an episode that we don't take him unless he's sick it's just not worth
having him that upset. He loves my other cat they are great together, if anything, she gets the upper hand of him when they restle. The dogs just make a wide
circle around him, like they no "handle with care"....

Our orange babies are pretty laid back but they have their quirks for sure. Tinky will reach out and grab you as you walk past him if he wants
attention...this works because when his claws sink into your skin, he gets your undivided attention!
His sister Peaches is a hair freak. She will go out of her way to find a way
to get a grip on my hair and drool in it....also sinking her claws into my skin in her attempts. Marmalade is just a big blob of love and he never does
anything except snuggle. Erasmus, the once feral boy, loves attention and he's a gentle giant. The latest 2 we have here are orange boys too and ever so
lovable!

I believe it was Sarah Hartwell who said that there's a large amount of orange cats in Scotland (Suse help me here if you would like to elaborate) and that
their fiery tempers when upset and angry match their red-headed Scots people's tempers.

That makes sense...isn't there a theory, John Wayne even mentioned it in his movie the "Quiet Man" that the tempers of the red headed Irish......
Must be the same idea

John Wayne is one of my heroes and The Quiet Man is one of my favorite movies by him.

Some one thought my Leo might have Siamese somewhere in his background that might be why he is the way he is. He too likes to paw at you as you go by, usually
he'll take a swipe at the dogs as they walk by, which is funny to watch as they usually will take a round-about way to get around the crabby orange cat. He
is what he is and I love him anyways, I just don't know why he is so crabby, I could understand if I had rescued him at a older age but I got him at an
extremely young age from a barn.
Thank you for the information.

The general steroetype (very general) that I've heard about orange cats is that the males tend to be outgoing, full of personality, and often a bit on the
feisty side. True of my "first born" who can be downright aggressive but also has an awesome personality and is very nearly overly friendly. My
little orange guy (in my avatar) is sweet-sweet in personality and scared to death much of the time Not feisty in the least.
And in females I've heard the orange gene to be the cranky gene! In a tortie, the "tortie temperament" is attributed to the orange gene it has. A solid orange female is thought to be quite a spit-fire. True of a few female orange cats I've met, but not all. When it comes down to it, of course it's individual. But I do think there may be something spicy linked to orange
We get about one orange female a year through our rescue organization. Although, I already had my orange for the year, born in January, adopted last week. Maybe there will be another. We had one tortie male two years ago, first time I ever saw one in real life. He was actually a tabby-tortie but definitely had the red and black colors, not just red undertones like many tabbies. Poor guy, we never even seriously looked at his parts and called him a girl's name until he went in for his "spay" and was pronounced male. |
