My log (at this moment of my posting) shows this topic has been opened up 84 times since I posted it last night. However, no one has commented. I find the lack of commentary extremely odd since this is a HUGE advancement in feline health and the veterinary field since Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) infection is one of the leading causes of death in cats. In the United States, 2% to 3% of all cats are infected with FeLV. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) occurs in about 1.5% to 3% of cats in the United States. About 5% of FIV-positive cats also have FeLV.

Posts: 4301 Mar 10, 2008 17:57:12 FF&F Staff Administrator Upside Down and Backwards In Ozland	I think perhaps some people are just too scared to hope this is the treatment they are praying for a positive kitty.I feel many people a wary of human or animal breakthroughs,but Suse you have no way of knowing how many people made a call to the vet they use first thing today.Good information like this is always needed.

Posts: 21808 Mar 10, 2008 18:29:37 FF&F Staff Administrator, Owner Totally Caffeinated	Well, it's true that I don't know that, but regardless, I still find it very bizarre that as vocal as most people are on this board that they haven't latched onto this thread with expressions of high hopes, or worry that it's not as successful as it's made out to be at this point in time, or just elated over this breakthrough. Each their own, I guess. I know I have been so excited ever since it popped into my mailbox last week. I just hated like the dickens that I didn't have time to post it until last evening. I, for one, am SO thrilled knowing that there is hope for thousands and thousands of little kittens and cats in this country.

Posts: 4558 Mar 10, 2008 19:20:26 Critter Companion	I'm personally thrilled since we have several FIV+ cats here. Iwaited until I had the time to read it carefully and post. I think it's a fantastic breakthrough and I'm trying to understand, for sure, if it's for FIV as well. The first part mentions FIV, but the rest goes on to talk about FeLV so I followed the link and now I have even more questions. Is this something the is used before infections pop up or do they wait until symptoms appear? This sounds like the best news so far for these babies!

But thanks for posting the link Suse. It's a starting place for researching a new treatment. Viral treatments have been hit and miss (more miss) in humans and animals, unfortunately. If only they were as easy to treat as bacterial infections. But again, thanks for posting it.

LTCI is a naturally occurring immune stimulating protein that helps restore your cat's ability to fight infection by increasing the production of lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are immune cells that help the body identify and destroy viruses and certain cancers. LTCI is injected under the skin. For the first month LTCI is given weekly, then it can usually be given monthly, or as needed, depending on the cat's response and your veterinarian's advice. Clinical studies show that some cats respond in the first few weeks. Response to treatment may vary depending on your cat's condition and their immune status. LTCI has passed a formal safety study where no significant adverse events were reported. LTCI is a naturally occurring treatment aid and is not synthetically made. LTCI is only available through licensed veterinarians in the United States. Please contact your veterinarian to discuss LTCI treatment options. It's for both FeLV and/or FIP infected cats and many of the symptoms associated with the two diseases. I think the rest is pretty much self-explanatory. Well, sure Wally, it may be a bit premature, but based on their studies, this is still a MAJOR breakthrough. I remember when oral flea and heartworm meds first came out. Everyone poo-pooed those drugs, too, and now we take them for granted to do the job they are designed to do. If just one cat is saved, I'm just too, too happy! This drug has been long in the making and personally, I'm on cloud nine with extremely high hopes that it will help eradicate these diseases. Have you heard what the per dose cost is yet? Haven't had a chance to talk to my vet, but will bring it to his attention at our visit next week. Fortunately (knock on my wooden head), we don't have any FeLuk+ kitties.

Posts: 21808 Mar 11, 2008 20:21:30 FF&F Staff Administrator, Owner Totally Caffeinated	After work I ran by the pharmacy to pick up my allergy refill (no kidding, I'm highly allergic to cats well, all us cat folk know it's not the cats, but their dander) and bumped into Dr. Steve. He was filling a script of Tapazole for his clinic. Anyway, he states that the LTIC cost is $23.50 per injection here locally (Shreveport area in NW Louisiana).

Will check with our vet next week when I take 2 down for recheck (1 for thyroid level and other for tongue growth). Then the next day go back for at least 2 TNR's. Got one tonight (big old tabby tom) and hopefully another white tom who seems to be going blind. It never ends.
