Macao teenagers detained for "barbecuing" cat
MACAO, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Eleven teenagers were arrested by police for "barbecuing" a cat at a local vacated construction site on Valentine's Day in Macao, according to Macao Post Daily on Friday.
According to the daily, police received a report after Thursday midnight that there was a fire at the construction site, and hours later the police found that the 11 teenagers aged between 11 and 14 at the site were "playing" with the badly charred carcass of a dead cat, the daily quoted a Judiciary Police spokesman as saying.
The teenagers admitted to the Police officers that they had "barbecued" the cat, and they claimed that the cat had been dead before they decided to burn it, the spokesman said.
The cruel behavior of these teenagers might be a result of their viewing too much violent content through screens and Internet websites, said Pun Chi Meng, general secretary of Critas de Macao, a local social service organization, adding that if the same case occurred in other country they will probably be sentenced to jail.
However, minors under the age of 16 cannot be charged with a crime in Macao, the daily said, adding that they can be ordered to undergo non-penal educational measures.
Police has launched an investigation into the case, namely whether the cat was still alive when the teenagers "barbecued" it.
