Posts: 265 Mar 4, 2004 00:34:22 Bigtime Critter Lover	Tags : None i keep reading too much i think on leukemia. thats cuz im a worrier.... well some things don't add up- article wise. what should i do? i hope most of you remember my feline leukemia post a little while back and my ordeal with stuff and the kittens and oreo. well i thought as long as you cleaned the food bowls and litter pan and gave away the infected cat (or kept apart) the disease wasn't an issue anymore. but according to this websites article- you have to replace stuff and wash bedding and... well heres the section i am talking about. read it yourself - is this mereley an opinion? i am confused now. heres the website address and i copied and pasted the article's paragraph that i am talking about... let me know your thoughts. i may have to worry again- more.... www.hdw-inc.com/healthfelv.htm What Do I Do Now to Protect My Cats?? The only method for protecting your cats is to remove any FELV-positive cat from other cats completely. You should also follow strict quarantine procedures including separate utensils, housing, litter pans for the FELV positive cat, and thoroughly washing your hands, clothing and shoes after handling and caring for the FELV positive cat. Do not breed an FELV positive queen!! If you lose a cat to FELV, it is recommended that you wait 30 days before bringing in a new cat, and then only after the area has been thoroughly scrubbed and disinfected with a solution containing 4 ounces of household bleach per gallon of water, rugs vacuumed completely, and all litter pans, food dishes, bedding, etc. have been replaced.

Posts: 265 Mar 4, 2004 00:45:39 Bigtime Critter Lover	heres an example of the other side: The virus does not survive well in urine, feces, or in the environment, so cats will not be infected just because another cat with FeLV has lived in a house before them or comes into their garden. this was taken from here:www.vth.vt.edu/clientsvis...ukemia.txt now that is the total opposite of what the other place said. i find things like this all the time. even my vet isn't clear on this. there are two at the practice and each tells me different! should i really go and throw out oreo's beloved black furry $40 beddy?!?!?!?! if you don't know the full story and are interested - see the post by me under feline leuk. on this health board. thank you-Amy

Posts: 4076 Mar 4, 2004 09:20:01 FF&F Staff Lead Moderator Upside Down and Backwards In Ozland	Amy the virus only lives a few hours out side of the host cat,so I don't think you have to much to worry about,we all worry that's just because we love our fur kids so much You have done the normal clean up,don't think any other measure are necessary.

Feluk is more serious. However, from my experience (or rather, the experience of some of my rescue friends), I really think you're ok... your cat's exposure to the positive cat was minimal, and I really don't think that contact with blankets, carpets, etc is a means of transmission unless one cat drooled all over a blanket and the next cat came and licked up all the drool! But one of my friends brought a cat she'd rescued into a no-kill shelter who tested positive at her arrival exam... my friend said that the shelter receptionist freaked, told them to immediately take the cat outside, scrubbed everything the cat had touched, and made her wash her hands before she'd deal with them. So even those who should be very knowledgable aren't always. -Kim and her gang

There is a no-kill shelter here that found 2 kittens testing positive and euthanized every kitten in the place regardless and without further testing!!! Now to me that's just so wrong!!!!! We lucked out....i had found Peaches and Tinky and my husband went to this shelter to inquire about getting them in to be adopted out......ONLY cuz it was a no-kill adoption center!!!! He was told that they has a couple sick kittens and they would take them if he would bring them back in a week or 2. Well thank God our timing was good otherwise Peaches and Tinky would be at Rainbow Bridge right now!!!! Trust these people here to tell u the right things.....or to lead u in the right direction to find ur answers.

Posts: 2089 Mar 4, 2004 18:08:05 FF&F Staff Moderator Home at Last	I remember a similar case last year when the Humane Society in Broward County (FL) had an outbreak of something (enteritis maybe?) - some kittens/cats that had been adopted subsequently died with their new families - but I think the Society euthanised all the cats/kittens. I seem to recall it was something like 140. The details are a bit hazy. I'm sure they do good work but for a "No Kill" shelter I have heard that they will euthanise at the first sign of ill health. Sadly, Broward and Dade Counties seem to have a real problem with unwanted (many household and formerly loved) pets. Sorry if I've veered off a bit here. & Callie The OTHER Red, White and Blue.

Unfortunately, what she's stating on that page isn't correct. Rule of thumb, Gang - watch your sources - if a vet or veterinary university didn't write the article, or if the web site doesn't give his or her sources where the info was originally found, don't believe a thing you read. This is one reason that I cite ALL sources when I write articles for my web site; otherwise, I let it be known that my article is my opinion only.
