Posts: 66 Feb 14, 2004 21:33:24 Critter Lover	Tags : None I've noticed that Tika is shedding more now, maybe it's just because she's now 1 1/2 old, so all the fur's going through the shedding cycle..and because she's black I see a lot of dandruff..I really don't think her diet (Wellness) is affecting this..I wonder if this is normal or maybe it's because people in my house keep feeding her all sorts of other food (like table scraps, and the other kitty's food Medi-Cal Reducing..which I've told them not to feed her but that's a whole 'nother can of worms) Maybe I should give her a supplement for the dandruff, there was something I saw here that's supposed to be good for that...Evening Primrose Oil was it? She really hates being brushed, I bought her one of those slicker brushes which works really well but she hates that even more...gets upset at me and bites me and the brush (not hard tho ) I have one of those rubber-type shedding brushes that works great but really gets the fur flying all over, needless to say I prefer to use it outside..any suggestions? Sorry for the long post...

Posts: 634 Feb 15, 2004 08:00:13	I use a human hairbrush and don't push down too hard. Sissy loves to bite at the bristles because she thinks it is play. All cats will shed. Sometimes my whole house is hair. I'm not sure how to control the dandruff. All of mine have some. Maybe one of the will know more.

Posts: 916 Feb 15, 2004 11:39:15 Critter Companion	It sounds to me like dry skin due to the winter as well. Have you tried running a humidifier? I've found that greatly helps in preventing dry skin. We have ours running all winter, but last week we were out of town for 5 days and turned it off. When we got back, the cats had some dandruff. I figured it was because of the dry air, or maybe due to the upset in their routine. Now they're back to their sleek, shiny selfs! I think there are also supplements you can put in their food. I've heard of using Cod Liver Oil mixed into soft food for cats with dry skin.

Posts: 80 Feb 16, 2004 11:44:05 Critter Lover	I agree with Joanne and Kat, that sounds like dry winter skin. You can mix a little cod liver oil into her food once a month. You do not want to go over board on cod liver oil because it has a lot of vitamin A in it and too much vitamin A can cause vitamin A poisoning. If she likes butter, you can give her that. Or the run off oil from a can of tuna packed in oil. Basically the idea is to get her oil intake up to help reduce the dry skin and any oil she likes and will eat is good. IOW, the more exposure to light, the greater the shedding. Indoor cats exposed to constant light may shed and grow a coat year-round. Most cats have a double coat that is composed of long, coarse outer guard hair and a soft, fine woolly undercoat (the Rex breed is an exception - these cats have a single coat made up of fine, curly hair and they shed very little). When the double coat begins to shed, the undercoat is shed in a mosaic or patchy fashion, making the coat look ragged and moth-eaten. This is perfectly normal. Cats don't shed evenly or in waves. When shedding begins, prevent skin irritation by daily brushing as much dead hair out as possible. Should you see dander or dry skin while brushing, don't brush so deeply or hard. Use a grooming glove to remove the loose hair, instead.
