I found this dog trembling and abandoned in a crate in front of an animal shelter late at night, and called the police to get them to open a nightdrop box. An hour later when they hadn't arrived, I took her and they haven't called me back even though they have my name and number. She's got some hairloss that I first was concerned might be mange (or mistaken as such at AC, which would lead to her immediate death). Also, I actually thought she might be paralyzed at first because of her behavior - lying prone, refusing to stand on her legs. Ok, so I'm a cat rescuer, and know not a lot about dogs!
Turns out she was just petrified and is perfectly capable of walking. She's posted as found at the pound to fulfill my duty. She went to the vet today who pronounced her about 5 years old, "probably spayed" (!! yippee !!) and having an underactive thyroid causing the symmetrical hairloss - no mange. Her meds cost about $5 a month.
Looking for a rescue organization to take her - we only do cats in mine.
She's clearly not used to being walked (refused to walk at first, kept thinking I was chasing her and she falls down prone when someone walks by), will only poop in the middle of the street. But now when she sees me coming to her (alone) she wags, wiggles, smiles, and kisses my face. Very very cute to be adored by her. Mostly she'd just like to be carried around but I did manage to get her to take a 1/4 mile walk today - I found she'll do it if I walk in front of her, not behind or beside her.
This photo is her after her bath, while getting terrible stares of death from a cat. My best guess is that she's a poodle-dachshund mix but I could be way wrong.

I hope I
can handle it!
