My husband and I TNR ferals and try to find homes for stray cats and kittens. We just moved to this area, (Central California), from the San Francisco area. I am shocked at how many ferals are around here, and how few services there are. In the last year I have spay/neutered at least 35 cats on my own. All of these cats are just from the block I live on! There is a woman two blocks away who feeds another 20+ ferals. I have at least another 10 cats coming to my yard to eat, and I have 5 ferals in my garage that I am having spayed/neutered in the next week or so. They are segregated by sex so as not to breed. I am bottle feeding a litter of 5 kittens, and I have a feral mom and her litter in a cage in my house. This is on top of our own cats, which are mainly special needs cats. This area is inundated with homeless cats. The local animal control is a horrific place, they have an 85% kill rate of healthy animals. There are a few animal groups locally, but they can only do about 150 low cost spay/neuter surgeries a year.
Anyway, the reason I was on the internet, and the reason I found this site; ten days ago a very sick cat showed up in our front yard. I have not had much luck with local vets, so I took him to an emergency vet in San Francisco. He was diagnosed with a severe upper respiratory infection and he is malnourished and was very dehydrated. He has a bunch of sores in his mouth and bad teeth. He is Fiv and Felv negative. He was also diagnosed with tapeworm, really bad fleas, and Giardia. He has the worst diarrhea I've ever seen. His whole butt is covered in sores. He was at the vet for two days and now I have him in my garage. I have a vaporizer near him and a heater to keep him warm. I am giving him sub-q fluids, pedialyte with a syringe and vitamin drops. His medications are: Flagyl, Clavamox, Viralys, Cyproheptadine, Baytril and Buprenex for pain. He was treated for fleas and worms/parasites at the vet.
After ten days he is still not that much better. He is eating fairly well, so I don't want to give up on him. He isn't suffering, though I really want to get the diarrhea sores cleared up. His treatment has cost a fortune thus far and I need to control his vet bills as much as I can. Does anyone have any suggestions on the diarrhea? Every time I clean his cage there is a huge mess of diarrhea. He is also extremely congested. I am not sure why ten days of antibiotics have not cleared up his URI. Does anyone know anything about Giardia? I've never had to deal with it before. I would really appreciate any suggestions.
Also, I have an Fiv cat who had to have all his teeth pulled because of chronic oral infections. He also has chronic sinus infections. Until his teeth became a problem he was doing great. He takes Clavamox daily and that controlled his sinus problems. He has not recovered from the oral surgery fully, even though it's been three months. Has anyone had any experience with something like this? His vet isn't sure what to do next.
Sorry this post is so long. I really appreciate you taking the time to read it.

Gotta agree with your assessment of the number of homeless cats. I haven't spent much time in central
California but it's been the same everywhere I've been in the state. Up in this tiny town in Northern California where I go on vacation I pulled into
a gas station to find a colony feeding there. But I was also amazed to see eartips in several of the cats - the idea of TNR even reached there! And here in
Oakland, even with very active rescue going on and lots of education about TNR, I did fix 30+ cats in my workplace neighborhood when I first arrived. We have
neighborhoods like that all over the place. We do have resources here in the Bay Area (as you know fromliving in SF) but not because they just appeared -
people fought hard to insist on those resources and we're still trying hard to obtain vet care at a price that is possible for us to help the number of
cats we do. Sounds like its time for Central California rescuers to get together and fight
