As part of his treatment for a back injury, my vet has put my dog on liquid Prednisolone. When he has put him on the tablet form before, I've always had to taper him off from it, but the label on this doesn't say anything about doing that. Should I call my vet and ask about that? Thanks for any advise!

It's widely accepted in the veterinary field that Prednisolone may predispose dogs and cats to diabetes. It can also induce insulin resistance, leading to hyperglycemia. In diabetic patients, corticosteroids can make insulin regulation more difficult since they have this effect on blood sugar levels. This is a relatively rare side effect but it is a consideration, especially in a pet likely to already be predisposed to diabetes. This is why you should gradually wean them off and why most vets adjust the dosage on a varying scale - higher to lower over a set period of time, then off of the preds for awhile before resuming another varying scale of dosage. I would certainly give him a call and check on this. Again, welcome to FF&F and enjoy the forums. I'm looking forward to hearing more about your dog. What is his name? Posts: 1209 Apr 16, 2008 13:34:25 Critter Companion Human in Training	I would always ask the vet if you are not sure of something. Better to aire on the side of caution, then to be wondering what if. My dog was put on prednisone when he was becoming ill,and he was only to be on it for a 2 week period. I started out with 2 pills a day, but in 4 doses. Then it went down to I think, 1 1/2 3 times a day, then 1 pill 2 times a day, then 1/2 , 1 time a day. My dog was an older dog, and the prednisone did not have an effect on him, as his illness was too advanced by that time. But I do remember weaning him off, but his was the pill form. Oh and by the way This is a great place to get information !! Enjoy the forums, and tell us more baout your furbaby!

Posts: 4291 Apr 17, 2008 06:55:58 FF&F Staff Administrator Upside Down and Backwards In Ozland	Hi as a human that takes this drug I know if you come off it fast it is very unpleasent and for a few dangerous,Vet's are wonderful but human too,could be he/she simply thought you would know or forgot to tell you, not good true but as I know human doctors forget too, a good reason to be like yourself and question what seems not right,never any harm done.

Posts: 10 Apr 17, 2008 10:47:26 Littermate	Hi Everybody! Thanks for the warm welcome and your comments to my question. Hector, my 10 y/o Chihuahua is feeling much better. Tuesday the Vet gave him a shot of Dexamethasone in his back and he seems to be back to normal and not in pain. He had jumped out of a friends arms a few years back and jammed his vertabra. A couple of times since then, he has had a flare up and I had to take him to the Vet for a round of meds and a shot in his back. This time he was limping, which I was really concerned about because the Vet said eventually it may get so bad that he would have to have surgery. I called the Vet yesterday and asked if I should taper Hector off from the Prednisolone. I'm supposed to give him 1ML twice daily, but I haven't started him on it yet. I'm very aware of some of the side effects of medication and I'm leary to say the least. He returned my call and told me to give him the prescribed dosage for 5 days then taper off with 1/2 ML. twice daily.

We have 3 older cats on Preds for arthritis of the back, plus I take it for my osteo several times a year. All four of us only take it for so long, then we're off it for awhile. Give little Hector some mega scritches for me and please keep us posted on how he's doing.

Posts: 10 Apr 24, 2008 09:46:04 Littermate	Hi, Hector is doing okay. The Prednisolone is helping, but I'm afraid when he's done with the meds that the pain will return. I think I will probably have to take him back to the Vet for xrays to see exactly what's going on, and maybe even surgery to correct the problem. I sure hope not, I hate to even think about it. I'll let you all know of any change. Thanks for your concern!

It's always a good idea to double check with your vet when not sure of something, like the prednisolone. It feels so good to know the answers and I'm sure you are pleased with that. Definitely keep us updated as to how Hector is doing. This might be a case of arthritis or could be bone spurs have developed, hopefully not something serious that requires surgery. Our 12 year old dog recently experienced back pain and leg problems....xrays showed bone spurs pressing on nerves in her back. She gets prednisolone on ocassion now but is doing much better after a week of that and then a couple weeks of an NSAID called Novox. When she shows pain we put her back on the Novox and it helps alot. Good luck and I hope the xrays, if you have them done, don't show anything serious.

May I ask...when you give your dog Prednisolone, do you give her cut-up tabs or liquid? I just cannot get him to take tablet form. I've tried to disguise it in meat and with chicken broth too. He still finds it and spits it out! I've even dissolved it in chicken broth and used a syringe to squirt it in the side of his mouth...he really hates that as I'm sure it tastes terrible even in the broth. Any suggestions?

Posts: 4291 Apr 24, 2008 17:10:04 FF&F Staff Administrator Upside Down and Backwards In Ozland	The liquid preds that you get from the vet tastes a bit horrid too,but is easier than trying to make a liquid yourself,Chi's have such a small mouth and less flexible than say a kitten. Acupuncture if available in your area might be a help,be sure to ask your vet.Give Hector a pat from me.

They think they are getting a treat and the pill is gone in no time. They work great for cats too. Hope that helps. You can find them at pet stores like Petsmart or Petco.
