Diarrhea from change of food |
Lead | ||
|
I just switched Kali over from Wysong Synorgon to Wysong Senior at our vet's suggestion (she had an awful lot of gas!) and I think I may have switched her
over too quickly...as she has diarrhea now and I think her tummy must be upset as she barked to go out the other night at 3am, and a few times in the evening
at the door - I have her on 100% Senior after a week (At least her gas has lessened quite a lot though!) - I know it can be common from a food switch, but is
there anything I can do to help alleviate the diarrhea? How long should it last?

I take it that your vet told you to gradually decrease the Synorgon until she's eating only the Senior since you mention that Kali will soon be eating all
Senior.
In the meantime, you can give her canned pumpkin (solid packed canned pumpkin - not the pumpkin pie filling). Since the dietary fiber in canned pumpkin absorbs water, it can be a great help to any cat or dog who has diarrhea. It can firm up loose stools or diarrhea within a few hours to a day. One tablespoon is all that is needed for a 50 pound dog. Most cats and dogs will lick it off your fingers; if she won't, mix it with a small amount of wet or dry food. Let us know how she's doing! Scritches to her!

We sing the pumpkin praises here too, it works well. Hopefully it's just the food switch causing this, but if it continues you might check back with the
vet. Please keep us updated on this sweetheart.

Thanks I'll certainly try that out - I thought pumpkin was more for constipation!
I did do it gradually - just maybe not gradually enough.. She's changed her pooping pattern too since I changed her over to 100% Senior, she won't go on her morning and afternoon walks (and we take her out for at least 20-30min each time!) She only goes once a day now, is that normal? And she tends to sit by the door and whine/growl at us every couple of hours...Is this because she needs to go? Or is she trying to get her way, knowing we'll take her out then? My fiance thinks she's trying to get her way... |

Solid packed pumpkin is pure pumpkin and can be used for both diarrhea and as constipation, as strange as that seems. When eaten, something about pumpkin knows
when to soothe and tighten or when to relax the digestive system.
A great treat for dogs, btw, is what I call "Pumpkin Cubes." Fill ice cube trays with canned pumpkin (I scoop it out into a mixing bowl, add just enough water to mix into a smooth consistency) then fill the trays, freeze, and dump the cubes into a plastic bag to store in the freezer. I hand them out as occasional summer treats or when our dogs are constipated or have diarrhea. A dog Kali's size would get 2 cubes. Small dogs, of course, would only get one. A good quality of food will produce less stool (and less gas), so I wouldn't worry about it unless she misses having a bowel movement at least once a day. Our dogs usually only have one movement daily. The growling may be something stemmed from her past home life. I would ignore it and not cater to her when she does the whining and growling. You'll need to watch her body language so that you'll be able to determine when and if she needs to go outside to relieve herself, but your fiance is probably correct in thinking she's striving for additional attention. Please keep us updated on her diarrhea and behavior problems. It's so good to know that's she's settling into your home so well!

I would keep an eye on the diarrhea, and try the slow introduction of food a little longer. If the pumpkin does not help, and he still has the diarrhea, I
would talk to the vet again. Make sure there is plenty of water to keep Kali hydrated.
Keep us posted on Kali

I tried a heaping tablespoon of pureed pumpkin Sunday, but then thought why don't I give her a smoked bone too? One those tartar ones that's supposed
to be good for her teeth? I think that was a bad idea, because Monday she had to go out tons of times and had worse diarrhea! So last night, I gave her
another spoonful of pumpkin and prayed she wouldn't wake me up at night
She was ok through the night - didn't wake us up to go, and in the morning it was better but still pretty loose And today she didn't ask to go out...I'll try another spoonful of pumpkin tonight maybe it'll round her out and solidify "stuff" for her.
How many days should I go on with the pumpkin for before either trying something else out or going to the vet? |

I would give it one more day on the pumpkin, and give her a meal of steamed chicken and rice and slowly introduce her biscuits. The bone idea was not that bad
BUT only fresh raw not smoked, treats are the last things she needs.Although Kali may think other wise
