Little Suzie was Abused & Neglected - Update |
Lead | ||
|
Southern States Dachshund Rescue (SSDR) saved a tiny 3 year old mini-dachshund girl this week who is now fighting for her life! Suzie was owned by a family
who left her outside in all kinds of weather and then "forgot" to feed her. She is extremely malnourished - she should weigh 10 - 12 lbs, but only
weighs 6 lbs. She has NEVER been to the vet! She has heartworms and just finished treatment for whipworms and hookworms. Suzie also has a diaphagmatic
hernia. At some point in her life, she was kicked in the chest. Her diaphragm was split and now all of her abdominal organs are in her chest cavity. She
can't take a deep breath because her intestines are pressing on her lungs. Suzie is in ICU under an oxygen tent, and is scheduled for surgery to repair
the hernia in the morning. The surgery is very delicate, since the organs have to be moved back to their original locations and the lungs may not react well
to a sudden lack of pressure. Suzie is already weak, but has a strong spirit. Please keep her in your thoughts.

Update on Suzie | #5 | ||
|
I just received the following email from Suzie's foster mom:
"I just got a call from one of the surgeons on the team taking care of Suzie. She is in critical condition right now as her blood pressure is very low and not responding to meds to bring it back up as much as they would like. The next 4 hours will be very critical to see if her blood pressure can come up and her lungs do not fill with fluid. Surgery was finished about 20 minutes ago. They were able to use her abdomen to do the surgery instead of cracking her chest. She had a big hole in her diaphragm that was stitched up and her liver, stomach, and intestines were pulled from her chest to their correct places.
I was told that she is back in her oxygen tent and being monitored. She has not yet woken up from surgery and she is on pain meds. Her body temperature is running low right now but they are working to bring that back up as well. They will call me in a few hours to let me know how she is doing. I will update everyone as soon as I hear anything new. Keep the prayers and thoughts coming." Thank you for keeping Suzie in your thoughts. The family that owned Suzie live in a place where there are no animal cruelty laws in place, so nothing can be done on this earth to prosecute them for what they've done to her. |

Lois, thank you so much for giving us an update on Suzie. My thoughts and prayers are continuing to go out for her. I've thought about her ever since I
read your OP.
May I ask in what state does Suzie's original "owners" live? |

This Just In About Suzie!!!... | #7
|
From her Foster Mom:
I was also told that her entire nipple was removed along with a lymph node because it was swollen. We will know the results next week.
Her lungs were EXTREMELY compressed but they were pink which is great. Her heart was being pushed outside of its normal position. She is still breathing hard but they think that it is because she is sore and she doesn't quite realize that she shouldn't have to struggle to breathe. Her liver was slightly abnormal looking-shape wise but it was hanging in her chest and in the hole in her diaphragm. Right now her lungs sound good- no sign of fluid. I will get another update in a few hours. Keep the prayers coming! I am not allowed to visit her in ICU but as soon as I can visit her I will. |

Suzie's original owners live in southern Mississippi. There may be nothing that can be done about their treatment of Suzie in this life, but
there's always the next one!

You know, Lois, I knew you'd say Mississippi.
Mississippi has one of the weakest animal cruelty laws in the country and is one of only eight states
with no felony provision for extreme acts of cruelty.
But you're so right - they should be quavering in their boots dreading the next life!

Suzie Made It!!! | #11 | ||
|
Allison called with another update on Suzie. She is still in the ICU oxygen tent but she is alert. She is still breathing hard but I was told that it isn't as hard as she was breathing when I took her in. She was uncomfortable so they have upped her pain meds that she is getting through her IV. They are hoping that the extra meds will help her feel more comfortable so that she can rest and heal. Tomorrow if all goes well she will be moved to a regular cage in ICU and not the oxygen tent to see how she does with her breathing. She does have diminished sounds in her lungs but the vets are pleased with her progress so far and there is no indication that she has fluid in them. It is too soon to tell if she is going to have some compromised lung function so they are watching her. I
may be able to see her tomorrow but that depends on how she is doing, which cage she will be in and if they think that she wouldn't get too worked up and
excited having me there. She wags like a loon and stands up whenever she sees me so we need to make sure she won't be stressed by it

Suzie is Going HOME tomorrow!!!!! | #17
|
Suzie was moved out of the oxygen tent this morning, and taken off IV pain meds. She is
taking oral pain meds and has had a couple of small meals, which she held down well.
She is breathing even better today but is still doing some abdominal breathing.
The vets think this will resolve too. She is still in ICU for monitoring and
the rest of the plans for her are contigent upon her continuing to improve. If all goes well then she will be able to come home with her foster mom in the morning!!! She will have to be on strict crate rest
for 10 to 14 days to let her diaphragm and lungs continue to heal. It may have to be extended. After that no jumping for a long time. (and never since she is
a dachshund
) They don't have any answers yet about her HW
treatment because she needs to heal fully before that is a thought, but they are thinking that possibly the spring would be the earliest that could happen.
Suzie is definately a fighter! She has won over the entire staff at LSU, and 4 staff members have already asked about adopting her! This little girl has a purpose she hasn't fulfilled yet, and she's going to have a long, happy life to do it in!!! Thank you for all your prayers. I know they helped! |
