I have two adopted shelter cats, Toonces 7 spayed female and Nick 5 neutered male. They were both adopted young and have been with my husband and I problem free for all those wonderful years.

However, we recently moved from a large house to a smaller apartment. For the first 3 weeks Nick was fine, but about two weeks ago he...

Yes, thank you for the Dr. Dodman recommendation. We took Nick to 3 different vet hospitals in the Boston area over the past 5 months and they all would just scratch their heads and say, well we don't know whats wrong with him, you should take him to Dr. Dodman! His name just kept coming up even amongst his peers. We're lucky that we live within 30 minutes of Tufts in Grafton, MA. In his newest book "If Only They Could Speak," read the chapter about Arlene and Seth. It is a...

Hi All, I just wanted to revisit and update you on Nicks condition since you all have been so so supportive and helpful. Well, it turns out that we took Nick to no less than 3 Orthopedic surgeons, all of whom said Nicks hip dysplasia was absolutely not bad enough to be causing these aggressive outbursts. One of them put him on Medicam, an anti-inflammatory, which we think upset his sensitive stomach so badly that he actually stopped drinking and would up in the hospital in full renal...

After a trip to the Vet on Friday afternoon, Nick was disagnosed with feline hip dysplasia. So we know what was causing his aggressive outbursts, and can now treat his condition. We choose a vet/hospital that specializes just in cats, which I would recommend to everyone who is a cat fancier. I called two different previous vets to discuss Nick's condition and both of them treated us as if we were imagining or exaggerating Nick's behavior change. However, the new Vet spent almost an hour...

Hi all and thank you for the suggestions. We have tried the "time out" approach with him by placing him in a spare bedroom with his food and toys etc., but after about 10 minutes of being let out he usually has another episode. I will also pick up that book and read it over the weekend. We have an appt. at a cat specialty hospital tonight for bloodwork etc., and to see if his behavior could be the result of some sort of medical issue. I will keep you updated and thank you again!

There was a case similar to this in the book "The Cat Who Cried For Help", by Nicholas Dodman. He's a vet behaviorist. If I remember the details correctly, he had the family start by kind of showing the cat "who's the boss" by feeding him only after calling him and things like that. Just things that let the cat know that the person is in charge. Maybe you can try clicker-training your cat to come for a treat. They ended up finally giving the cat in that case some...
